It has a plethora of business and security features, an excellent keyboard and touchpad, and a touchscreen. However, performance is mundane, and a larger display would be nice--especially on a unit this pricey. The Mini 5103's configurations, and there are a lot of them, start at $399 and can run up to nearly $1000 even before including extended service and warranty plans.

If our test suite is to be believed, you gain little in the way of performance with the new dual-core 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 processor. The Mini 5103's WorldBench score of 35 is similar to other Atom-based netbooks. The unit also felt sluggish during evaluation despite having 2GB of DDR3 memory and a 7200 rpm, 160GB Western Digital hard drive.

The lethargic feel is common among business portables, but worse on netbooks. It's caused in no small part by all the "value-added" background apps and services doing everything from encrypting, to face recognition, to protecting the hard drive. The 5103 had several useless startup items pertaining to RAID and the GPU, and the included McAfee security suite, while effective, is also a bit of a performance hog. Though IT might not like it, you can increase apparent performance significantly by weeding out the apps you don't want or use. Windows 7 Home Premium generally performs well on netbooks, but it couldn't overcome the software bloat in this case.

On the other hand, the 5103 came alive when it came time to display video. The unit played every movie I threw at it smoothly, including one at 1080p and a high-bit-rate 720p MP4 file that gives a lot of netbooks, and even some laptops, a hard time. The video also looked quite nice on the 1366-by-768-resolution screen, though for other applications that resolution is a bit high for a 10.1-inch display. Icons and text appear quite small unless you increase their size (go to Screen Resolution\Make text and other items larger or smaller in Windows 7). A lower-resolution 1024 by 600 display is also available.

Increasing the text/icon size also helps considerably with configurations of the Mini 5103 that sport a touchscreen display. The touchscreen is undeniably handy for presentations and the like, but arm fatigue sets in quite rapidly when using a vertically-oriented touchscreen. It would be nice if the 5103's display could lie completely flat, but it tilts back only about 45 degrees.

The 5103's keyboard is the currently fashionable "island chiclet" style; however, it feels a bit crisper than most. It has no numeric keypad, but is otherwise a notch above the norm. One caveat: the large gaps around the keys may collect debris at a rate that requires frequent cleaning. The touchpad is delineated from the rest of the keyboard deck by its shiny finish and is responsive. The buttons have a nice feel and a pleasant click for aural feedback.

It's not often we run across a netbook BIOS that needs discussing, but the 5103's has a number of low-level security features that bear mentioning. They include programmable system IDs (for in-house enumeration of fleets of notebooks), a DriveLock password, and a utility to securely erase said hard drive. You may also secure the three USB 2.0 ports and the connections for gigabit ethernet and 802.11n wireless. The BIOS interface is also one of the nicest-looking we've run across, and better yet, is navigable via mouse or touchpad.

The 5103 is a tad deeper than the average netbook at 7.09 by 10.3 by 0.91 inches. Weight is about 2.75 pounds with the AC adapter, while battery life is quite good at 7 hours, 49 minutes with the large 6-cell, 66-watt-hour battery. Running out of juice will be a rare issue with the Mini 5103 unless you opt for the smaller 4-cell battery--its run time fell just short of 3 hours.

Along with the aforementioned McAfee security software, our test model came replete with Skype and a full version of a capable, lightweight ode to Microsoft Office 2007: Corel Home Office.

Most users will be better served with less-expensive, consumer-oriented netbooks; however, the security and other corporate features make the HP Mini 5103 a no-brainer for IT departments--at least until they see the bill. Expand the screen to 11 or 12 inches, and there's little to quibble over.

Gold as a Gift

When to give gold as a present

In addition to the common practice of investment, gold also makes a nice present, for example, for a birth of a child or a graduation, a birthday, an anniversary, Christmas, a wedding or any other event.

It is the ideal gift for anyone who already has it all, as well as for those who are yet to begin their life.

Investment gold vs. jewellery gold

The advantages of investment gold compared to jewellery gold include the price and also the fact that it is free from value added tax. For example, the mark-up of an ordinary gold chain with a 585 hallmark (includes 58.5% of gold) tends to be 200%, whereas the mark-up of investment gold with a 999.9 hallmark (includes 99.99% of gold) starts from 6%.

If necessary, investment gold can be melted by a goldsmith, mixed with other substances and turned into jewellery gold. One gram of investment gold (hallmark 999.9) results in more than 1.7 grams of jewellery gold (hallmark 585).

Gold Coins

We offer a wide range of gold coins from the USA, South Africa, Canada, Austria, Australia and China. Our Australian coins also include the Australian Lunars that have images of the Oriental calendar on one side (for example, at the moment it is the year of the Dog and coins with the respective design are being made). Lunars are a popular gift mostly for children and grandchildren, as it is possible to choose a coin with the design of the birth year of the child.

Coins ranging from 1/20 oz to 1 kg are available. All coins are available at our offices, where it is also possible to buy gift boxes.

Gold bars/bullions

Our gold bars are made by the Swiss company PAMP, and bars weighing from 1 g to 500 g are available. As a special order, it is possible to buy gold bars weighing up to 400 ounces (12.5 kg). The bars feature the image of Fortuna, the goddess of luck.

Rarities

We also offer rare coins and coin sets that have been produced in extremely limited quantities; most of these have a production run of only 150 to 500 pieces. For example, the most interesting of the rarities currently held in stock is the Australian Prospector Collection 2004, as it includes a gold coin from 1904 and there are only 150 of such coins in existence.

The price of gold coins and bars is variable and dependant on the current global market price. We have based our gold prices on the prices of large companies that trade investment gold in London and Switzerland, but Tavid’s prices are more reasonable.

Gold is highly liquid

Investment gold is highly liquid; we will also buy back gold coins and bars.

Australian Lunar 2010 - Tiger

Reverse:The image of tiger's head on each coin captures the terrifying beauty of this awe-inspiring wild animal. Honouring its importance in the Chinese Lunar calendar, the reverse of each coin also includes the inscription "Year of the Tiger". Included in the design is The Perth Mint's "P" mintmark and the Chinese character for "tiger".
Reverse

In addition to investment these outstanding releases also make great gifts for people born in any year ‘ruled’ by the Chinese Lunar tiger – including 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 and 2010.

Year of the Tiger – 14 February 2010 to 2 February 2011

According to ancient Chinese mythology, beneath the calm exterior of people born in the Year of the Tiger lies the courageous and competitive personality of a natural leader.

Well-liked, people with ‘tiger’ personalities are charming, affectionate and passionate.  Prepared to take risks, they remain optimistic in the knowledge that they will always land on their feet.  Above all, the tiger symbolises power and daring.

Famous people born in the Year of the Tiger include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II (1926), Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890), Sir Richard Branson (1950), and Steve Irwin (1962).

Australian Lunar 2008-2010

The first Australian Lunar gold coin series produced by The Perth Mint 1996-2007 became popular beyond expectation among investors and collectors. Therefore, towards the end of the first series the demand for second 12-year Lunar coin series became big.

Struck from 99.99% pure gold, bullion coins from the Australian Lunar Series II represent a trusted and convenient means of investing in precious metals. Backed by an Australian Government guarantee of weight and purity, each legal tender coin also provides an extremely cost-effective way to acquire precious metal.

The success of the Lunar design theme, however, goes far beyond the investment value. Brilliant artistry and limited or ‘declared’ mintages provide powerful numismatic incentives to acquire the coins, especially for those people said to be born in the Year of the Mouse.

Contributing even further to the appeal of Series II, the majority of these coins are struck with a larger diameter than normal, adding to their prestigious appearance.

Design

Reverse:

  • 2008-dated Australian Lunar gold bullion coins depict a mouse crouching on a bed of stones with chilli peppers clustered in the background. Included in the design is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, as well as the inscription ‘Year of the Mouse’ and the Chinese character for ‘mouse’.
  • 2009 Lunar coin design depicts an ox lying on grass with bamboo branches above and the Chinese character for ‘ox’.
  • 2010 coin: The image of tiger's head on each coin captures the terrifying beauty of this awe-inspiring wild animal. Honouring its importance in the Chinese Lunar calendar, the reverse of each coin also includes the inscription "Year of the Tiger". Included in the design is The Perth Mint's "P" mintmark and the Chinese character for "tiger".

Obverse: Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, each gold coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse. Also the coins origin country, year, denomination, gold weight and proof are marked on the obverse.

Mintage

The Perth Mint will produce no more than 30,000 1oz gold coins. Production will cease when the mintage is fully sold or at the end of the series, whichever comes first.

No mintage limit applies to 1 Kilo, 10oz, 2oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz and 1/20oz gold coins. However, production will take place only one year, after which The Perth Mint will declare each coin’s official mintage.

A maximum of 100 10 Kilo gold coins will be produced. However, production will take place only one year, after which the coin’s actual mintage will be declared.

Investment Gold Coins

Gold coins constitute a simple, safe and beneficial way of investing in gold.

A standard gold coin weighs 1 ounce

Sizes of gold coins for investment purposes start from 1 ounce. 1 oz coins are the most widespread way of investing, which is why they are also easier to sell later. As 1 oz is a standard size for investment gold, they have the greatest demand in the secondary market and many coins acquire a numismatic value after the original runs have been sold out. Chinese Pandas and Australian Lunars are examples of coins that are likely to acquire a numismatic value and therefore cost considerably more than the mere price of the gold over time.

If 1 oz gold coins constitute the most reasonable investment alternative among modern coins, then older coins are available with the same favourable brokerage at a weight of 2.9 grams upwards.

Guaranteed by the government

Gold coins are issued by the treasuries of various countries, so they have their guarantee of purity and value. The People’s Republic of China has also agreed to purchase their gold coins back at any time, providing investors with an additional guarantee.

Hallmark or purity of the gold

Gold coins with a hallmark of at least 900 are considered investment gold. Gold coins made today are usually marked with a 999 hallmark (99.9% of gold). The purest coins have a 999.9 hallmark. 100% purity is impossible to achieve. The minute short-fall consists of various other metals existing in the coins (silver, copper, etc).
